The father of the boy ran away from home and was nowhere to be found. The reason behind leaving was that he could not provide for the children and the mother was left helpless. The children and mother have no place to live. Sometimes Eric stays with his grandmother who is as poor as his mother. When his mother gets something to do to earn a living Eric is left to take care of the siblings who most of the time stay without food.
